Becoming A Freelance Television Writer

By Jerry Phillips

Writing for TV can mean a lot of things because this line of work is extremely broad and has a lot of potential opportunities for growth as a writer. Now, if one is interested in becoming a freelance television writer, then there are a few things he or she needs to think about. First, he or she needs to think about which field to specialize in and what each field is about.

As mentioned above, a single specialization is the key to become a success in this field. Now, there are so many specific career options that one can go into if he or she pursues this path. Of course, the specific career path that one will take will all depend on which one he or she likes and which one he or she is good at.

The first specialization would be the commercial script writing field which would literally specialize in commercials. For this field, one has to know how to write a script that is very friendly and engaging so that it can relate to the viewers. At the same time, it has to have a rather sales tone that is used to make the viewer want to buy the product being sold.

Aside from writing commercial scripts, one can write stories and movie scripts. For this particular field, it would take a lot of imagination and creativity to excel in this field. In this line, one will write the dialogues for each character as well as the story of them.

If one prefers something in the side of journalism, there would first be the option of a speech writer for TV personalities. TV personalities could mean government official, news casters, and celebrities. It would be good if one would have a background in media for him or her to do better.

Another job that one can get in the field of TV would be a transcriber. The job of a transcriber is to simply transcribe the words of interviews, of speeches, and of news castings that are shown on TV. In order to be a transcriber, one has to have sharp ears and attentiveness of each word as well as detail oriented.

Finally, one can also be a journalist that may write news for casters that are on TV. These people get the news and report the story that they acquired and create news for it. This news will then be reported on TV with the journalist also providing a whole background and outline of the story that will be shown on TV.

If one would really want to go into this field, then he or she must ensure that he or she has enough experience for this job. The best thing about this line of work is that it can be done on a project basis or a freelance basis. This is to ensure that one is able to have his or her own time in order to create the material before the deadline.
