How A Great Space Game Is Developed

By Pattie S. Schaefer

There is a considerable amount of competition in the world of space game designers and programmers since they are all trying to make the very best games possible and to attract the most players. There are millions of individuals all around the world who are at least casual games; there are also die hard gamers that are obsessed with video games. Though adults prefer games that are more intense, graphic, and truly challenging, younger gamers tend to prefer releases that are fun and simple while still presenting enough of a challenge to keep them engaged. In order to reach their target audience and make their latest games as popular as possible, modern game makers spend a lot of time designing every aspect of their new releases.

A space game can be built around a moderately common gaming concept, such as a first person shooter or a strategy game, and then enhanced with creative features conceived by the game's designers. One aspect of their job is to create new plots and stories that will serve as the motivation for the events and characters of the game that they are working on. Doing that is not always easy though, since they need to create a character that will not be too adult for children who play the game while at the same time not so childish that adult gamers become insulted or bored by the way the game progresses.

An additional challenge faced by a space game design team is creating the game's overall background setting. Games have to have creative backgrounds that remind players of general science fiction themes without seeming like they are copies of other popular science fiction games or movies; striking this balance and being creative yet familiar is a challenge. Concept art has to get prepared and then programmed; it is not always easy to turn the visual ideas that the design team has into real visual gaming features on a computer or TV screen.

Even after a game has been designed and programmed, a lot of testing must be done to ensure that gameplay will keep gamers entertained. Several hours are invested doing real game testing in which bugs in the programming are identified and removed in order to make the final product as smooth and fun to play as possible.

A lot of real work goes into designing a space game in the hopes that it will be a hit amongst sci-fi gaming fans. Knowing about the effort that goes into producing these games can help you enjoy the experience of playing them that much more.
