Is Internet Telephone Technology Really All That Different?

By Saul Saresi

The demand for Internet Telephony systems in businesses right across the world is higher than it has ever been, and continues to grow and an alarming rate as yet more people become aware of the systems' benefits.

Internet Telephony is constantly evolving. The ever increasing demand for Internet Telephone systems is causing millions of pounds to be spent on fixing the glitches which are still present and preventing the technology from being commonplace in the majority of businesses.

But what it is that makes them so special? Well, apart from the increased audio quality and reduced call costs, their unique and standout feature is that they offer several ways to make a call, as you will soon discover.

The most common way to use them is through an ATA (Analogue Telephone Adaptor) device. An ATA is an analogue-to-digital device which converts the signal from your traditional analogue phone into digital data which can then be broadcast over the internet.

All ATA devices come fully assembled and can be installed quickly by anyone in just a matter of seconds to enable a standard telephone to begin making internet phone calls. ATA devices are also usually provided completely free of charge.

IP phones look very similar to standard phones - with a cradle, handset and buttons - but are in fact specialised internet phones with RJ-45 Ethernet connectors in place of standard RJ-11 phone connectors. Internet phones are also very easy to install, needing simply to be plugged directly into your router.

The other way to make calls is via the computer-to-computer method and a large number of companies offer completely free software for this kind of Internet Telephony. The only equipment required is a computer, a broadband connection, speakers, a microphone and a soundcard. With the computer-to-computer method all calls are completely free.

So although internet telephone technology may not be the easiest of technologies to completely understand, it is clear to see that regardless of your requirements, there is a system to suit your specific needs. And with free software available, there really is no excuse for not trying this new technology and seeing if maybe, just maybe, you too will embrace the world of the internet phone.
