ITG World-Wide Deployments of Information Systems

By Deborah Laramie

Notwithstanding elaborate acquisition strategies and vendor preferences, large deployments of IT components often betray the intent of their designers, payers and hopeful system users. As executive management is often accustomed to continuous requests for more technology, more equipment, software and communications bandwidth, a repeatable missing component often shows up; testing.

At ITG, our primary corporate objective is to provide computer services and support to government and industry where integrated computer-based systems are vital to effective information processing. A key element in obtaining this objective is the development, integration, and implementation of an efficient, cost effective, and timely computer, software and communications installation process.

Coupled with the warranty and service support for over one hundred thousand systems and components, under contracts with multiple U.S. Government agencies and prime contractors, this complex logistical and technical effort requires strict quality standards and repeatable processes, which ensure customer satisfaction and repeatable revenue streams. In support of these activities ITG maintains over 1,230 locations in the United States and availability to near 4,000 available field engineers and technicians making our company uniquely qualified to provide reliable, high quality system installation and support services.

Having been in business for some 27 year, we have learned the "hard way". We understand the "dos and don'ts" and have refined this craft and mandate specific practices and project monitor and control processes. We know that successful adherence to established installation schedules is only obtained when precursor activities of acquisition, distribution, client site schedule coordination, and personnel deployment are appropriately coordinated, monitored, and tracked.

Installation Testing Process:

1. Planning documentation (installation plans, schedules, staffing, equipment specification requirements, etc.) 2. Equipment acquisition documentation (i.e., Inventory listings, purchase requisitions), 3. Installation documentation (i.e., Test Analysis Report, Ready for Use certification ) 4. Daily and weekly reports 5. Asset management reports (i.e., inventory spreadsheet) and 6. Quality assurance audit reports.

While the above list identifies the normal documentation generated by ITG during an installation process, the specific documentation requirements for a project is developed at project inception, so that they may more closely reflect client formats and reporting requirements. For the installation activity itself, ITG generally recommends a Ready for Use (RFU) form to report the successful and thorough completion of installation and certification work. At a minimum, the RFU provides the installation date, user name, room number, building, bar code numbers of monitor and CPU, and image version. The information from the completed RFUs is provided to the client in a *.csv file.
