Would Social Media Agencies Help Alex Kidd?

By Rob Sutter

For those who know of Sega, it's clear that it has one defining mascot. It is characterized by Sonic the Hedgehog, who has been the blue blur since the early 90's and shows no signs of stopping. What many fans don't know is that Sega had another mascot known as Alex Kidd, who was meant to serve as the equivalent of Mario but sadly didn't catch on as well. Even so, I think that he can make a return today and social media agencies could help him along the way.

Alex Kidd doesn't exactly have the kind of appearance that kids during the early 90's would have liked. This is hampered by the fact that his games did not have a lot in the way of speed and moving about slowly seemed to hamper the experience. Kidd's uniqueness, as far as games were concerned, lied in the fact that you could play rock, paper, scissors as a bonus game. While this was certainly different, Sega could not rely on Kidd in order to help push the company onward.

I believe one of the other reasons why people didn't take to Kidd at that time was because they wanted someone with more of an edge. Even when Mario was running - literally, at times - strong, the truth of the matter was that young people wanted a character that seemed to be more rebellious and Kidd's almost Disney-like appearance did not do it for a good number of people. That's when Sega had to go to the drawing board and bring in Sonic; the rest was history.

However, I believe that Kidd could make a comeback and it would be due in part to the actions of social media agencies. For example, you have to consider that Kidd would need a modern audience and I feel like that would be easy to take hold on. Parents seem to be more hesitant to let their children play mainstream titles, so Sega showcasing Kidd as a more family-friendly mascot would be able to bring in families as the target group. There are other aspects as well which should not go unnoticed by companies like fishbat.

Kidd may be able to survive in the gaming world today, especially since there is a shift in audience. This is supported by Sega's "Sonic & All Stars Racing" games and amongst the many Sonic characters and others which belong to Sega, Kidd is part of the activities. Sega did not leave out their original mascot, though this does make me wonder. With social media agencies being used or not, is it possible that he could, one day, make a real splash in the gaming world as we know it today?
