Making The Right Choice When Looking For Luxury Watches

By Andrew Sullivan

Luxury watches are often a symbol of wealth and power. However, for many they are symbols of love and commitment between loved ones. As this is such an iconic purchase, a buyer should know what constitutes a quality time-piece. The buyer should also have enough information to ensure that the correct price is paid.

The first thing a recipient of such a precious gift will often see will be the presentation case. A lackluster box might lessen the impact of the gift. The most respected watch makers will always give thought to this and provide a case that befits the contents.

One major sign of a quality product is the crystal used. A watch crystal is the transparent covering that protects the face from damage and physical contaminants. Sapphire crystals are used on the more expensive pieces and retain their new look for longer. This is due to their scratch-proof properties.

The main advantage of a watch with a glass crystal is that it will withstand much greater impacts without shattering than sapphire. However, glass will scratch and scuff much more easily. The best watches use sapphire as a new look can be maintained for the life of the watch.

While many luxury watches are made from precious metals, the most common material is steel. Good steel can look every bit as impressive as silver, however it is important to be aware that there are different grades available. A quality product should be made from grade 316L steel and should not be hollow or made with folded steel. Manufacturers do this to cut costs.

A good product should have the 'feel' of something special. A purchaser should insist on handling the watch and even trying it on. A well made watch will make little or no noise. It will also fasten easily and sit on the wrist without excessive movement.
