I do not know whether or not you have ever considered, wondered and worked out that communication happens on many alternative levels and speaking to you as a tutor in advanced communication skills, I would like your permission, if you read on, to share with you some things you may observe during your next communication exchanges. Communication as a 'model ' consists of 3 elements. The WORDS you assert, the BODY movements you display and the TONE you adopt to deliver the word (s). Mehrabien and Birdwhistell researched and documented their thoughts on this and research is available online for those interested.
For this post, I'd like to draw your attention toward the BODY movements someone gives out as they communicate that can give you a clue as to how they process information, in this instance 'TIME. '
Ever been sat with someone that is talking about something that they have done the previous day or week? Or may be what they are doing in the future? Its a particularly engaging situation. Perhaps once you have read this post you might ask a person the question , "Tell me about something that you did last week"
As they answer, keep an eye open for the following:
Eye movements - where will they go?
Head Movements -what happens?
Hand movements -where are they when they are debating about the 'event ' (if they use their hands)
Then ask, "Tell me about something you do next week? And study the same movements.
What differences did you notice from situation to situation? You will have worked out 'where ' that person places 'time ' (past and future) in 'their world. '
If you found it challenging observing others. Perhaps ask the same set of questions and see what happens?.
Getting more mindful of how people prepare their personal information can end up in enhanced relationship building for sure.
Now you have taken a step closer towards improving your communication skills!
