A Quick Look at Choosing a Laptop

By Joseph Robertson

Determining which laptop to purchase can be troublesome. Searching among the best laptops for college involves researching one or two factors. In this post I am going to simply suggest 4 different classes to consider.

The Desktop Laptop - This category will enclose your larger laptops - 17-18" diameter.

- Most powerful laptops
- Most versatile in terms of software capability
- Portable compared with a desktop

The Standard Laptop - This category is where a standard laptop will be seen - 15-16" diameter screen.

- Here's where the most competitive prices are usually found - depending on build quality
- Good power, but keeping mobility
- Capable of running most programs.

The Ultralight Laptop - This category is for the super thin and light laptops in the 13-14" diameter size.

- A touch more dear than the Standard Laptops
- Because of the nature of ultra thin laptops, these are of significantly high quality.
- Able to run a lot of programs - minus more heightened production type programs due to less performance.

The Netbook - These are still laptops, but are quite small and transportable. 8-11" Size.

- Netbooks are Cheap and very compact. They can be had for 1/4 the price of the standard laptop.
- In a position to do standard activities such as web-surfing, email and word processing.
- Sadly their build quality is quite poor - though solid netbooks can be purchased.
- Not able to run many programs - the performance of netbooks is quite a bit less than a laptop (hence the lower price).

These are the basic categories that you are going to find laptops arranged into. Each category has a variety of quality factors and performance that may be found. Price doesn't always mean the laptop is good, nevertheless it can be an indicator. The general concept of 'you get what you pay for ' is pretty accurate when it comes to laptops.
