A sash window has cords that rip or break as they age. It does not require much money to fix them. In fact, it can be a do-it-yourself project. No home improvement expertise or experience is necessary. Here are some steps to take in determining How to change a broken cord on a sash window.

This home improvement task starts with pulling together all the tools needed. Included in the list are a utility knife, lubricant and screwdriver. Additional items one will need are new window cord roping, a putty knife and a hammer. As soon as the tools are gathered, one should begin by taking the window out of the frame.

One the window removal occurs, it is necessary to gain entry to the sash cord. In some cases, there will be panels to allow access. Dated windows, however, may not. If the windows are older, then the window casing will also need to be removed.

The first thing that needs to be done in this project is that one must get to the sash cords. The access panel, for windows that have it, will be on the side jambs. Opening the panel will gain a person access to the sash, the pulleys and the weights. Once access has been made, it is important to remove the sash weights and any old cord that is attached to those weights. Replace the weights and put a block of wood that measures between four and five inches thick underneath.

The next step is to lubricate the window pulleys. Make sure they are clean first. If not, clean them before spraying with a lubricant. Following that step, do what it takes to make feeding the rope through the pulley easier. One way to do this is to tape the end of the new cord to the end of the old cord. Of course, the next step is to feed the rope through the pulley. Withdraw the old cords from the access panel. As the old cords are removed, the new cords will be fed through the pulley.

The weights will have a hole in them. Run the cord through those weights and tie a knot at the bottom. Usually, there is only one knot used and it is put in a fitted groove. The rope will typically extend between two and three inches past the hole of the pulley. Follow the process above on the other side. When both sides are done with the basics, add finish nails and trim back to the window. If so desired, choose a stain and finish to match the room's atmosphere and decor.

A small amount of time in the afternoon, good instructions and the right equipment are all it takes in beginning to understand How to change a broken cord on a sash window. No home improvement expertise is necessary. Completing the project is made easier with the tips found in this piece.
