The Influence Of The Internet On Children

By Thomas Walters

The computer and the internet is to the children today what the television was to their parents with the same attendant concerns - the focus of their time and attention in practically all their free times. The following studies should cause serious concerns:

Pornography in the internet is virtually free and up to 90% of children have visited pornographic sites.

Up to 70% of sexual exploitation of children is committed when they are in the virtual world of the internet.

Of the children who have experienced sexual harassment, only 25% have confessed to their parents.

Because of inexperience or naivet, 75% of children will knowingly reveal personal information to strangers over the net in return for some favor.

What makes the problem even more difficult to control is that instant messaging (IM) is the norm among teenagers. What's significant about this? Because 37 percent of online teens have used IM to write something they would not have said in person.

There are both personal and technological dangers associated with a child's Internet use. The greater peril is that children will be easy prey to online exploiters, and secondly your computer will be severely compromised with indiscriminate visits to questionable websites where spyware and worms or even more dangerous viruses are lurking waiting for unwary victims.

Protecting children should be a parent's primary concern. Parents do have the means and prerogatives to do so. First, establish boundaries. Decide what Web sites and content you feel comfortable letting your children see, then take steps to filter or block everything else. To do this would need an investigation of the internet viewing record of the child.

Parents can avail of the Content Advisor feature in the Internet Explorer that will allow parents to censor what children can view in the Web. 2. It works just like the "V-chip" feature of the latest TV issues, where the shows are evaluated and classified according to content for the parents' reference in deciding what are acceptable and what are not.

There is a free publication that provide these kind of useful information for free, the "Parents' Guide to Internet Safety", from the Geeks On Call, an on-site computer services provider. The Geeks On Call have created an educational program designed for children and parents, called the "Kids Club" aimed to educate parents and children about the safe use of the Internet, which was the source of the Parents' Guide.
