Is there Such a Thing as Voip Marketplace Saturation?

By Saul Saresi

No matter what business you're in, if you haven't at least considered the benefits that Voice Over IP could bring to your company, you haven't been paying very close attention to the future of business communication - a future that offers drastically improved call quality and lower call costs as standard.

But as the saying goes, you can have too much of a good thing - and that it seems is what may be happening to the world of Voip - with certain sectors facing the challenge of having to ensure that market saturation does not become a reality in the near future.

Time for some stats to back up the facts - beginning with Voice Over IP subscriber numbers. In 2010 the number rose by over 12% to reach one hundred and fifty seven million. As well as this, residential provider numbers grew by almost 15% in 2011 to just under one hundred and eighty million.

There is no surprise that the USA leads the table for the most active subscriber numbers - followed closely by Japan and France - with the inadequately connected UK somewhat adrift of the competition in tenth place.

The reason for the uptake is clear. In France, for example, since the introduction of fibre based broadband services, over ninety four percent of subscribers also have a Voice Over IP service, a fact which has lead the market sector to near saturation point.

But regardless of when if and even why market saturation should ever occur, there are still many untapped markets just waiting to jump on the Voice Over IP bandwagon, and none-more-so than China, where in 2010 figures show just one bundled Voip package for every twenty subscription.

And if further re-assurances were needed just take a quick look at the number of Smartphones endlessly making their way onto the market, all ready and waiting to be equipped with the latest Voip subscriptions. That is if the fact that the subscriber rates tripling in 2011 is anything to go by...

So market saturation is a very real and very imminent issue - but it surely isnt one that will be causing any sectors of the Voice Over IP service providers sleepless nights - unless they happen to be in France or Japan. The truth is that eventually all businesses will come to rely on Voip, but the reality is that there's still a whole world of opportunity out there, and there will be for many years to come yet.
