Five Killer Things That Will Want to Make You Use Gmail and Outlook Together

By Bill Mann

If you are going to use Outlook, you need to have an email account connected to it. In a corporate environment, your copy of the program is probably connected to a Microsoft Exchange server. But if you are using Outlook at home, you're going to need to find an email account to use with it. Many substantial companies, like Yahoo!, Microsoft, and Google offer free web-based email (webmail) accounts, as do literally hundreds of smaller companies.

While you possibly have hundreds of choices for an account to make use of with Outlook, not all cost-free accounts are appropriate. The leading choice for many folks is to connect to Outlook with a free Gmail account. As soon as you have a Gmail account, it simply takes a few minutes to link it to Outlook.

Why select Gmail instead of some other service? Ease of use and money are the main reasons. Some webmail services only work with their own web page, and intentionally prevent programs like Outlook from connecting to their servers. And it goes the other way too. Some email services allow you to connect to your account through Outlook, but charge you a fee for the right to do so.

So these two factors rule out many of the possibilities. If you rule out services like those above, Gmail is clearly the best choice. It offers you several key benefits.

Gmail's IMAP connection is the biggest benefit. With this, you can join the two together efficiently. When you create an IMAP linkage to Outlook, you can work with your email both in Outlook and in your web browser. Thanks to IMAP your email is synchronized and identical in both places.

Also, Gmail provides you massive amounts of storage on Google's servers. With the ever-increasing amount of email we all get, and the ever-increasing size of files, this is very welcome.

It takes only minutes to sign up for a Gmail account, if you don't already have one. From there, setting this up is a piece of cake. The Auto Account Setup wizard in Outlook does all the work to make it happen.

By now it should be clear why Gmail is a great choice if you need an email account to use with Outlook.
