Networking Terminology Explained

Here we are going to cover some of the most common networking terms you may come across.

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line or ADSL, is the most popular form of internet connection in the UK

IPTransit - an internet connection provided by a transit provider.

Atom is like traditional RSS, but with more options. A new technology that is becoming more popular. The technology is based on RSS.

Bandwidth refers to data transfer from one location to another. Measured in most cases in mbps or kbps.

Blog - similar to an online journal where a person or society may publish its thoughts or opinions, but can also publish facts. Most bloggers update once a week, where blogs are chronologically arranged.

A generic high speed internet connection- faster than a standard modem.

Co-location - where an individual or company host their own server / computer hardware with an ISP.

DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is a protocol used to ascertain an IP address dynamically from another server on a local network.

DNS - domain name system is a mechanasim that takes a domain name and translates it into an IP address.

Domain name - all websites have a unique domain name. Domain names have three parts- the name, a seperating dot, and an ending- e.g. .com.

Ethernet - a common networking method on a LAN. Several speeds are available.

Firewall - used to keep the bad guys out. Provides protection and filtering of certain traffic.

FTP - file transfer protocol a common method transferring files around the internet quickly and easily.

A host is a computer or client on a network that provides services to other computers or clients on the same network.

HTTP or HyperText Transfer Protocol allows hypertext files to be transfered to and from and across the internet. HTTP is commonly known for loading websites.

IMAP is an email technology. IMAP allows for email to be accessed and manipulated on a remote server. IMAP allows for greater control over email as they can be stored, emailed etc and shared between groups where POP email can't.

IPv4 Internet Protocol version 4, this is the most widely used version of the internet protocol. IPv4 allows for a maximum of four billing ip addresses. Because of this it's being replaced by IPv6. IPv6 is slowly replacing IPv4 as it allows for the use of more IP addresses.

IPv6 is slowly coming into play as the replacement for IPv4, allowing for a vast amount more IP addresses.

LAN - local area network is a private network of computers.

Network - when two or more computers are connected together to share resources.

Where would I find these services? An transit company would be able to provided these hosting services for a company or individual.
