Free Standing Bag: Choose One That Is Perfect For You

By Annette K. Daughtry

A free standing bag is one of the finest ways to improve your boxing or kicking boxing skills. It also provides a great aerobic and strength workout for most people. Although, there are a lot of different types of free standing bags for you to choose from and it is important to get the right kind for your style of fighting and for your own personal needs. I give some suggestions for you to get the bag that is great for you.

First, you will want to be sure that the free standing bag fits into your home or your workout area. Make certain that you have five to ten feet of space all around your bag, so that you can train adequately. You will want enough space, so that you don't punch over a lamp or hit a wall on accident (this is never fun). Also, note the height of your bag, being certain that you don't choose one too short.

You will need to fill your bag and there are a few different choices with good points and weaknesses. In my fighting, I like water the best because it makes the bag feel similar to how a real opponent would react, if punched. You could also work with sand or a handful of other things. Water though, is the best, cheapest, and simplest way to keep your bag working.

The material that your bag is constructed of will also make a difference as to how useful it is in your practice. There are leather bags are durable, but are also not cheap. I enjoy high density foam, because the firmness seems just right. It is also very good and will last a long time before it breaks down.

To wrap up, the shape of your free standing bag is vital too. There are the bags that look like half of a person, that a wide variety of people like. The usual boxing bag works too, that sometimes has targets to focus on. I think that the human-shaped bag works the best for people that are serious about competing in MMA or boxing. It gives you a more real feel for how to best strike your opponent and land your strikes. But each fighter is different, so check out the gym near you and get a feel for the different styles, before you buy yours.
