Fix No Sound Problem On windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 Laptop or Desktop computer

We often experience sound issues in our computer due to various reasons such as corrupted sound drivers, incorrect audio settings or cables not connected properly. We can fix these sound issues by updating or reinstalling audio driver, adjusting sound settings and making sure that the there is no issue with the sound cables connections.

Adjust Audio Settings - In Windows XP, you will find a Sound icon in the task bar, right click on it and select "Adjust Audio Properties" and ensure that the checkbox beside Mute is unchecked or if this box is checked, uncheck it and click on Advanced and move the sliders so that all the Settings are set to their maximum. If audio icon is missing from the task bar, click on Start menu and select Control Panel. If you are Classic View, double click on "Sounds and Audio devices" and select the checkbox beside Place Volume icon in the taskbar and click on OK. Adjust Audio Settings - Vista or Windows 7: 1. Click on Start and select Control Panel. In Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound. 2. Now select Adjust System Volume under sound. Adjust the system volume by moving the slider up. 3. Click on Start and type Sound in search and select Sound from the results list. 4. Double click the Sound option and in Playback tab select Speakers option. This option needs to be set as default. 5. You can verify it by opening the Mixer from Volume. You may try even by changing the audio device to other one to check the sound issue. Right click on Speakers option and you can try Configure Speakers or Test to test the functionality of your audio device. 6. You can also test the audio from Sound options. Open the Sound window and select the Sounds tab, select any option in Programs which has the sound icon beside it and click Test. Make sure that the mute is not turned on.

If the problem you are experiencing is a recent one, I recommend you to try with System Restore. Perform System Restore: In windows xp, Click on Start menu and select All Programs. Click on Accessories and System Tools, select System Restore to open it. In windows 7 and Vista, click on Start button and just type system restore in Search. Select System Restore from the results. Follow the System Restore wizard by selecting the first option "Restore my computer to an earlier time". After you have restored your computer to a earlier time, check the sound in the your computer. If restoring the System has not fixed the issue, try the following step:

Reinstall Audio drivers: We will have to check the sound drivers, since if they are corrupted, you might not get sound working on your computer. Uninstall and reinstall audio drivers from Device Manager. In Windows XP: 1. Right click on My computer and select Properties. In System Properties window, select Hardware tab. Click on Device Manager. In Vista or Windows 7: 1. Type Device Manager in Search, click on Device Manager in results. 2. In Device Manager window, click on "+" sign next to Sound, video and game controllers. 3. Right click on IDT High Definition Audio Codec or Realtek High Definition Audio and select Uninstall. This will uninstall the audio drivers. Windows may prompt to restart the computer, in this case restart your system. If windows does not prompt, you can reinstall the drivers by selecting the option "Scan for Hardware changes". In either case, Windows will automatically detect the changes and reinstall the sound drivers. 4. It would be better to reinstall the latest audio drivers from your computer support website. The laptop manufacturer website will have the latest drivers available. We can install these drivers to fix the sound issues. If you are experiencing the issue after upgrading from Windows XP or Vista to Windows 7, it might be due to the missing or incompatible drivers for Windows 7. You can fix the issue by uninstalling the existing drivers and reinstalling the audio drivers for Windows 7. 5. Reinstalling or updating the sound drivers can fix most of this no sound issues in computer. If the audio device is not shown under Sound, video and game controllers, it will be present under unknown devices. Make sure that it is enabled if it is disabled. Right click on the device and select Enable to enable the device and perform the reinstalling steps to resolve the no sound in windows 7 problem. 6. If Sound device is not present under Sound, video and game controllers, you can check it by clicking on Action menu in Device Manager and Selecting Scan for Hardware Changes.

Reinstall Or Update Audio Drivers - Check the audio drivers in Device Manager as chances are that the drivers might not be working properly. Reinstalling audio Drivers in Windows 7 or Vista: Click on Start and in Search type Device Manager. 2. In Device Manager window, click on "+" sign next to Sound, video and game controllers. 3. Right click on IDT High Definition Audio Codec or Realtek High Definition Audio and select Uninstall. This will uninstall the audio drivers. Windows will prompt to restart the computer, restart your system now. Windows will automatically detect the changes and reinstalls the sound drivers. 4.We recommend you to reinstall the latest audio drivers from your computer support website. The laptop manufacturer website will have the latest drivers available. We can install these drivers to fix the sound issues. If the audio device is not shown under Sound, video and game controllers, it will be present under unknown devices. Make sure that it is enabled if it is disabled. Right click on the device and select Enable to enable the device and perform the reinstalling steps to resolve the no sound in windows 7 problem. 5.If Sound device is not present under Sound, video and game controllers, you can check it by clicking on Action menu in Device Manager and Selecting Scan for Hardware Changes. Reinstalling audio drivers in Windows XP: 1. Press Windows key and break key simultaneously to open the System Properties window. 2. Select the Hardware tab and click on Device Manager. You can even try be removing and replacing the sound card by following the steps in the manuals for your computer model if the sound device is not detected. We suggest you to do this steps carefully.

Install Missing Codecs: If you are experiencing the issue while playing any media files, make sure that your laptop or desktop computer has the required audio codecs or you can search for the same on internet, download and install them for free. When you are using players such as Windows Media player or any other player, the audio or video file might fail to be played because of the missing codecs for that file. So ensure that the computer has the latest and required audio codes for the file to be played without any sound problem.

Check controls and cable connections: Laptops have their own volume control, make sure that they are enabled. Usually laptop have Fn + F(key number) key number changes for each laptop model. If you are experiencing the problem in desktop computer, verify that connections between the computer and speakers are properly connected. Check if the sound cables are working, you can test the issue by using other cables if available.
