Jailbreaking the iPhone

By John Price

First, it's good to realise what's meant by the term" jailbreaking " an Apple iPhone. As with all iPhones, Apple intentionally built features into each operating system [for example, iOS 5 for the iPhone 4s] which prevented users from downloading anything except from its own iTune or App stores. To paraphrase you were compelled to buy all of your music and Apps from Apple.

Once an iPhone is jailbroken, any App can be downloaded from anywhere and there are many millions of them out there, many for free and you can readily transfer movies, games, videos etc directly from your PC. You then have complete access to a whole universe of fabulous features and Apps all without having to go to, or pay, Apple.

There are two common forms of jailbreak, being known as either "tethered" or "untethered". In the tethered case, your iPhone needs to be hooked up to your PC every single time it's rebooted and the jailbreak software run again to simply get it returned the jailbroken state, and even to effect a reboot . The problem here is if you unfortuneately have access to a laptop or desktop computer then your iPhone will be frozen into the Apple logo mode.

In the untethered case, once the iPhone is jailbroken then you can reboot it without having to connect to a computer with jailbreak software. This is obviously the more desirable sort of jailbreaking and should always be used when available.

There's also a new composite jailbreak strategy known as semi-tethered which will permit the iPhone to be rebooted without being connected tethered to a PC but such reboot can introduce major limitations, for example Mail and Safari won't work and many jailbroken installed Applications will crash on launch.

Right now, untethered jailbreaking solutions are freely available for iPhones up to the iPhone 4, although not yet available in any balanced state for the 4s [using iOS 5.0 or 5.0.1]. At this time there is a tethered solution, and even a limited semi-tethered solution, but we definitely recommended to patiently wait for the tethered version and do not bother to install these others unless you actually cannot help yourself!

It won't be long before the world's network of super smart iOS jailbreakers/hackers find a stable and sustainable untethered solution for the iPhone 4s operating under iOS 5.0.
