Now is the time to start that business

By Ryan Reger

It can be intimidating to start a business, but push past the fear and get started.

My wife and I have an online furniture business and I remember our very first customer. We posted an ad for a TV stand on Craigslist and got a call from a man about 20 minutes away. Because we didn't have a store for him to come look at it, he was uncomfortable purchasing without being able to see it.

Because we didn't have a way for him to see it in advance he didn't want to commit to purchasing. However, I really felt like he would buy it if he could see it.

I called him back and offered to bring it by for him to see. If he liked it he could buy it. If he didn't like it I told him he wouldn't have to pay me anything. He loved that idea.

He loved it so he paid cash for it and even recommended us to his neighbor that same day who just a few days later purchased from us as well. We were in business.

The advantage of living in the Dallas/Fort Worth area is that three of our major suppliers have a local warehouse so we could post an ad for an item and not have to go pick it up from the warehouse until we had an order. That has helped us keep from investing money in inventory.

Now we ship all over the country, but we didn't expand overnight. We took a lot of small steps in the beginning.

My point in all of this is to say to you "start." That business that you have been wanting to begin - do it. Get started. Do something. It will never happen if you don't take the steps to begin.

If you don't know where to start ask someone. There are some great resources out there to help. Ask me. I'm not an expert in every business, but I do feel that I can point you in the right direction.
