Why Is My Computer So Slow All Of A Sudden? Here's Why

By Myke Longo

Does it seem like your computer just isn't as fast as it used to be? If so, not to worry and you definitely don't have to buy a new one to get your computer running back to top speed.

Your should be able to get your computer running as fast as possible for as long as possible, as long as you know exactly what to do. Without any more unnecessary text, let's jump right into what is most likely slowing down your computer.

Does it take your computer forever to start up? - If your PC takes a whole lot longer then you'd like to start up, there is most likely some unnecessary programs and services that are set to open as soon as you turn on your computer which will really slow down the boot time. Various programs and services can be automatically set to run as soon as your computer first boots up, so checking on the list startup programs on your computer occasionally so you can monitor them is a great idea.

In order to do this using Microsoft Windows, the easiest way is by using the using the keyboard shortcut (Windows key + R) to launch the Run window. Next, type in "msconfig"click OK to open the system configuration window and click on the "Startup" tab at the top. Uncheck any services and programs in this list that you may not want to slow down the startup process. Keep in mind that doing so will not uninstall the program or service from your computer, but simply prevent them from booting up with your system. After your computer fully boots up you can then run the program or service.

Having Trouble Running Multiple Programs? - If your computer glitches or freezes up whenever you have multiple high memory programs open at once, it may be time to upgrade the RAM (random access memory) on your computer. Replacing or upgrading the RAM is one of the easiest ways to give your computer a significant speed boost. Every time I hear someone wonder, "Why is my computer so slow all of a sudden?", the first thing I'll recommend is to upgrade or replace the RAM. The more RAM your system has, the more powerful your computer will be.

Upgrading the RAM is incredibly simple even for the most novice user, and can be done one a desktop computer or a laptop. Most likely your computer and operating system can handle more RAM then is currently on your computer, and if not, you can always upgrade your operating system to a 64-bit system to handle a lot more RAM. The more RAM your computer has, the more high memory programs you can run at once, without your computer freezing.

Is Your PC Infected with Malware? - You may not be aware of all the hidden malware that could be slowing down your computer right now, unless you have a quality security software. Most computer security software is classified in two categories; antivirus and internet security. Since most computers are connected to the internet, you'll want a internet security program that can automatically scan your computer for malware threats weekly or monthly. This way once you install security software and set up a automatic full system scan, you can forget about it and only launch the program when it requires your attention.

Basic Maintenance Tasks - Some basic maintenance tasks are essential to maintaining a fast computer. Computer maintenance is fairly simple, including simple tasks like organizing your files, uninstalling unnecessary programs, monitoring start up processes, removing the clutter and freeing up some extra hard drive space.
