Defining Organizational Assessment Tools And Their Value

By Elise Clayton

Any organization has to make sure to gauge its performance. This can only be attained by using certain tools which will demonstrate its various strengths and weaknesses. Such elements have to be highlighted so as to act accordingly. This basically involves the notion of organizational assessment, which we shall be discussing in further detail hereunder.

A firm's strengths include areas where it is doing well. These need to be taken good care of so as to ensure that they remain as such, or to better still, improve even further. These could include efficient and motivated workers who are managing to outperform, or else managing to draw good terms with a supplier who is providing good quality stocks at relatively low prices.

Such aspects will have a direct impact on the firm's profits. In order to sustain such positive features it is important to act properly. For example, if you know that employees are motivated, it will pay to encourage them even further. This can be done by offering rewards or fringe benefits to make them even happier.

Besides monitoring such positive areas it is crucial to check out any negative factors. Any weaknesses have to be identified as soon as possible, so as to take corrective action. These can be recognized by any comments from unhappy workers, through meetings or from lack of efficiency. Employee surveys also help to find such weaknesses.

Obviously these then have to be acted upon. This involves organizational changes which will help to hopefully make the firm overcome such weak spots so as to operate better and more efficiently.

Ongoing assessments are crucial to achieve these aims. Hence, a solid communication structure within the business is of utmost importance. This entails meetings, task forces, workshops and an environment which supports employees' thoughts and feelings. In view of the fact that employees are a key to any business, it is important to appreciate and act upon their opinions. Besides this will help them feel more motivated and appreciated as persons rather than just passive machines which form part of a production process.

Hence for effective organizational assessments interviews with employees are very important. Additionally, employee surveys can help to encourage employees to show what they think on various aspects of the firm, including the workplace environment, working conditions, remuneration and related matters. They can be encouraged to show their opinions, as well as voice any suggestions they might have.

Management should then go through such answers carefully so as to ascertain any tips, alerts and suggestions which need to be given additional attention. This will lead to a better understanding of the business' weaknesses, and areas where corrective action should be taken. Ultimately, organizational assessments will lead to a better firm if they are carried out properly.
