Awarding Staffers With A Trophy For Funny Achievements

By Marshall Brooke

A trophy is not a stranger to sports competitions. In fact, it is a major part of that event. A competition without a trophy doesn't seem like a serious one. It's what the contestants are vying for, the symbol of their success.

Trophies aren't just found in physical contests. Even a neighborhood elementary school gives away a trophy to the winner of their Spelling Bee contest. Cooking competitions, pie-eating contests, beauty pageants, talent competitions, and almost any match that measures skills and talents also utilize trophy as the ultimate prize.

But it doesn't always have to be a prize for the game winners. Believe it or not, there is also a need for trophies at the workplace.

When staff members do an exceptional work, the management ordinarily awards appreciation plaques. These plaques show that their hard work is acknowledged and greatly valued. Whatever a staff member's place in the office is, he will strive to do more because he knows he is a valued member of the unit.

And if plaques are about showing appreciation, trophies can be a source of balance in the workplace. How so? A trophy shouldn't just be about competitions. It can be used as a funny reminder that a workplace is composed of individuals who work with each other.

An annual "awards show" can do the trick. Staff members can vote for their fellow workers for humorous categories. Examples are an award for the most worthy worker who has consumed the most cups of coffee in a day and a trophy for the office Karaoke King and Dancing Queen for the gifts they have exhibited during a previous office party.

It's not to ignite the competitive nature of the employees. The awards should not be serious at all, and should be hilarious and inoffensive. These "honors" will hopefully remind the workers that they may be in that place to work, but they are also working with their colleagues. And while their job needs them to concentrate and give their best, they should also have time to loosen up and enjoy each other's company.

That's one way of creating balance in the work place. Although the entire year has been busy for everyone, an "awards show" once a year will make it fun. Laughing with each other will help lessen the stress and tension in the office.
