Facebook Wonders

Almost everyone and everything today has a it page. it has surpassed all others in the social media and networking realms. In fact, it is probably the most popular and most used social networking site ever. And it doesn't stop there.

It first came to the surface in February 2004 but was limited to only colleges and universities in the Boston area. By July 2010, it had more than 500 million users in only six years later. it features started by solely creating a personal profile page to joining multiple groups, sharing and posting articles, and creating "fan" pages.

It was created by Mark Zuckerberg, a computer science major and his college roommates and classmates, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes during his sophomore year at Harvard. The site was limited to only Harvard students at first but later expanded to other schools and universities in the area. Later the expansion spread to high school students and then spread further to anyone over the age of thirteen.

So what makes it so much more popular than other social networking sites like MySpace? MySpace held the number one position among social networking sites until it quickly surpassed it within a few years. One of the possible reasons for MySpace's decline was the bad reputation it achieved for allegedly enticing sexual predators preying on young teenagers. Parents quickly criticized and blamed MySpace for the danger of their children.

One of the reasons more people caught on to it more than MySpace was that MySpace received poor publicity because it was said to attract male predators who preyed after young teenagers. There were several cases and news reports of male predators stalking and trying to meet up with young teenagers they met online. For a few years, MySpace was labeled as dangerous and unsafe.

One reason why it became more successful than MySpace is the business world really caught on to it. All kinds of businesses, organizations, stores, and even schools can be found on it. Even news stations and TV shows will tell their audiences to "Find Us on it". This is what made it so huge.

It even has a feature where it will suggest friends that are also it users who work or attend school at the same place. You can see how the network expands from there. The networking opportunities that stem from this are truly amazing.

Another popular it feature is its "friends" suggestions. Once you add your place of employment, hometown, or school, it will suggest friends or coworkers for you to add to your contact list as it reads and recognizes the common interests between you and another contact. Imagine over 500 million users connected to 500 million users. One can clearly see how it has affected our society. It has made us closer and opened communication among us. Social networking sites have made our world smaller and opened and connected ourselves more closely. It's amazing how a small idea became so big.
