Ideas for Storing your External Hard Drive

By Jim Witt

External hard drives are very common in many people's homes. They are devices that need to be connected to a computer in order to function. Some people use theirs all day long while others only need to get it out occasionally. Whatever your situation, you should find a good safe spot to keep your hard drive.

The actual place you put your external hard drive makes all the difference. There are a lot of places around the house that will work really well as long as you give them a proper assessment. Some of these good places are closets, sturdy desktops, strong shelves, and even a drawer.

For those that need their external hard drive out by them all the time, it's best to keep it upright in a back corner of a desk. Your desk may have a shelving unit, which would also provide a good solution. Depending on how sturdy your desk is, you may even be able to store your drive inside a drawer. Just remember that you don't want it jostled and bumped.

Those who don't use their drive very often should find a good temporary storage place like the closet. A closet can provide great protection because it's out of the way and can be closed off. Just be sure to designate a good area for it free from clutter or anything that might bump or knock your hard drive.

Shelves also make good storage spots as long as it is a good strong shelf. You also want to use a shelf that's fairly high up or in a place that is safe. Place the drive upright and against the wall so it won't fall off.

If you have file drawers or other drawers around your house, they can provide a shelter for the external drive as well. You don't want to use a flimsy drawer that jerks when you open and close it. Do a quick assessment before making your final decision.

First, you will need to make sure it's steady and smooth so your drive doesn't get jostled around. You also want to clean it out really good so no dirt and dust gets inside the vent of the device. If your device gets dirty on the inside it can really mess things up.

All of these ideas would make good options for storing your external hard drive. You may not want to reorganize the way you have things set up but it will be worth it to keep your drive protected. Always remember that taking care of your drive is necessary if you want to keep it running.
