Keep in Touch on Facebook

By Marvin Cox

Facebook pages today are everywhere. They are advertised on news stations, TV channels, commercials, and in magazines. it has left its fingerprints all over the media and throughout society.

It first came to the surface in February 2004 but was limited to only colleges and universities in the Boston area. By July 2010, it had more than 500 million users in only six years later. it features started by solely creating a personal profile page to joining multiple groups, sharing and posting articles, and creating "fan" pages.

It was designed by Mark Zuckerberg, a computer science sophomore at Harvard. Zuckerberg and his roommates and fellow computer science classmates, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes collaborated on the joint effort in creating the world's famous social networking site.

At first this site was only available to Harvard students. After it rapidly began to grow, its popularity and usage spread to schools in the Boston area, and later spread to high schools, and later spread to everyone over the age of thirteen. All this occurred in just a short six years.

One of the reasons more people caught on to it more than MySpace was that MySpace received poor publicity because it was said to attract male predators who preyed after young teenagers. There were several cases and news reports of male predators stalking and trying to meet up with young teenagers they met online. For a few years, MySpace was labeled as dangerous and unsafe.

It's features top all others. With the abilities to design your own personal profile, fan or group page, the web of networking grows and grows. Adding a limitless amount of friends and other contacts is part of what makes it so huge. A normal it user has the ability to post and share articles or videos, upload and share photos, post comments, chat interactively with other "online" available users, and send messages.

Another feature is the ability to "friend" other users. When creating a personal profile, you can fill in the fields with information on where you work, your school, your hometown, and where you even went to school. Each time you log in, it will suggest "people you may know" based on the organizations you are associated with and have filled in your fields.

Another popular it feature is its "friends" suggestions. Once you add your place of employment, hometown, or school, it will suggest friends or coworkers for you to add to your contact list as it reads and recognizes the common interests between you and another contact. Imagine over 500 million users connected to 500 million users. One can clearly see how it has affected our society. It has made us closer and opened communication among us. Social networking sites have made our world smaller and opened and connected ourselves more closely. It's amazing how a small idea became so big.
