The Mobile Universe

By Glen Thomas

We all know what cell phones are. Most of us own one and use it on a daily basis. Cell phones belong to the incredible area of mobile communications.

Mobile communications refers to any electronic device that communicates with another device through a network or satellite. Today they are known as "cell sites". The first mobile phone was invented by Dr. Martin Cooper with Motorola in 1973. The first mobile phone released to the public wasn't until 1983.

Cell phones have greatly evolved in the last thirty years. They have immensely shrunk in size. They went from the large, heavy two-way radio to the tiny, hand held device that we use today. Even in the last few years cell phones have evolved further to Smartphones. A Smartphone is just what it is; a "smart" phone, meaning it has all kinds of capabilities and functions that a typical cell phone does not.

Mobile communications has evolved since the late 90s when cell phones really began to grow popular, specifically with Smartphones. A Smartphone is just what it is; a phone, but better. Smartphones have all kinds of capabilities and functions that blow a regular mobile phone out of the water. The capabilities include, of course, Internet and email, messaging, weather reports, calendars, and even camera and GPS functions.

Another popular feature of the Smartphone is its Applications. Applications or "Apps" are small (in size - usually only a few MB) and are available for all kinds of purposes. Today, organizations design Apps specifically for Smartphones to help and improve their customers or client base. For example, Amazon puts out a eBook finder and reader App, Pandora Internet radio has an App to be able to access Internet radio, and even Sports centers like ESPN puts out an App that gives sports updates.

The telephony industry really hit it big with mobile communications. In 1990, approximately 12.4 million people were using cell phones or subscribed to a cellular plan. By the end of 2009, it was recorded that 4.6 billion were using cell phones, which included Smartphones and the like.

Even though cell phones and Smartphones are one of our favorite gadgets and accessories, there are some downfalls that we can't ignore. Unfortunately the use of cell phones has posed a danger to our lives. There have been thousands of motor vehicle accidents due to drivers either talking or texting on their phones while driving. Sure, cell phones are fun to use and we enjoy talking and texting with our family and friends, but they aren't worth risking our lives.

The telephony industry and mobile communications, or cell phones and Smartphones have really become necessary tools in our lives. So try and answer the question again. What would you do without your cell phone or Smartphone?
